clay cylinder, cut in half

BACK TO BASICS FOR SEMI-ADVANCED
October 10 2024 from 10:00 AM till 4:00 PM

One day, one mission: pull up and cut through!

Redistributing clay from the bottom to the top of the wall is the most crucial and challenging step in pottery. It remains a challenge, especially when working with more clay. So it's time to practice this thoroughly again. Today, we’re not keeping anything! We’ll start with small practice cylinders of 600 grams and gradually increase the weight. I’ll guide you on the height and diameter that matches each clay weight. Since we won’t be keeping any of the work and the result isn’t important, you’ll work more freely and effectively. We’ll push the clay to its limits and literally get the most out of it.

Who:
You have some throwing experience. You can center and pull up, but you feel that you’re still leaving clay at the bottom. You want to push your boundaries and become a better potter.

Set of four dinner plates, fully glazed in Snakeskin.

TWO-DAY PLATE THROWING WORKSHOP
October 7 and 11, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

If you ask me what I do best, I'll say plates. I often make tableware sets, and plates are a big part of that. Because of this, I make them frequently and have become quite skilled at it. I’m excited to teach you my techniques. Large or small, with or without raised rims—anything is possible.

On the first day, we will throw the plates and I’ll demonstrate various techniques to achieve a great final result. A few days later, we will reconvene to trim our plates.

The focus lays on technique and quality, not quantity. The plates made during the workshop will not be bisque fired or glazed. However, trimmed plates can be taken home if desired.

A maximum of 10 participants will be accepted, ensuring individualized guidance and the chance for everyone to learn at their own pace.

Who:

Experience on the wheel is required for this course. You need to be able to center smoothly to participate. For a large plate, you’ll need about 1.3 kg of clay, and for a small breakfast plate, 800 grams of clay. Please keep this in mind when registering.

Details of a glaze workshop from SOGO keramiek.

TWO-DAY GLAZE INTRODUCTION
September 6 and 13, 2024 - Kom Moi Mortsel
Other dates at various locations in Flanders and beyond

Do you have some dusty glaze books and/or recipes lying around but aren’t sure how to start? Have you found glaze recipes online but can’t quite make sense of them? Would you like to better understand what happens when you mix raw materials, apply them to your piece, and fire it in the kiln? If so, this introductory glaze workshop might be just what you need.

In this two-day workshop, I will provide a foundation for working with your own homemade stoneware glazes. The glaze recipes are suitable for firing temperatures between 1220°C and 1240°C. The workshop will alternate between theory (presentation) and practice (glaze testing).

During the two days, we will cover the following topics:

  • What is a glaze?

  • What basic components make up a glaze?

  • What raw materials are used to make glazes?

  • What are opaque makers and colorants in glazes?

  • How do you read and interpret a glaze recipe?

  • How do you work safely with glazes?

  • What different glaze testing methods are there? We will test various methods in practice.

  • You will make one kilogram of glaze based on your favorite color sample from the workshop to take home with you.

Who:
This course is suitable for anyone with little or no experience in formulating glazes.
Note: Pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers should refrain from participating. We work with metal oxides, and while we take necessary safety precautions, such as gloves and masks, there is still some risk. Participation is at your own risk.

Price:
This workshop costs €240. After the course, everyone will receive a digital copy of the full presentation. Additionally, you will take home 1 kg of glaze (chosen from hundreds of samples) to experiment with on your own.

TABLEWARE THROWING AND FINISHING IN 6 DAYS
July 8 to 12, 2024 + Glazing Day September 21
Kom Moi Mortsel (Fully Booked)

In addition to teaching, I spend my days creating tableware for restaurants, bars and individuals who appreciate handmade beauty. With extensive experience under my belt, I’ve already thrown thousands of plates and mugs that are used daily. In this 5-day workshop, I aim to share with you the nuances of throwing functional ware in series. You will plan the number of pieces, shapes, and sizes in advance. We’ll discuss your ideas during the workshop, and then you’ll get to work. The first days we'll focus on plates and other flat, low forms such as pasta plates and small dishes. We’ll then move on to mugs and bowls. The last two days will be dedicated to trimming everything and ensuring a cohesive set.

I provide the best tools for everyone, including bats and professional measuring tools from Julius Handmade (see photo), so you have everything you need to create perfect series.

A maximum of 10 participants will be accepted, ensuring individual attention and the opportunity for everyone to learn at their own pace.

Who:

This workshop is not suitable for beginners. You need to be proficient at centering, pulling up clay and have good control over the material. If asked, "What are you going to make?" you shouldn’t respond with, "I’ll see where the clay takes me."

Mastering large weights is not a requirement; tableware is usually thrown with a maximum of 1.3 kg of clay. Most pieces use much less clay. You don’t need experience with production work, but you should have determination, be willing to focus on one form, be prepared to work diligently, and be able to spend the entire day working intensively at the wheel.

Handmade ceramic sink, fully glazed in Soft Tomato.

SINK THROWING FOR (SEMI-)ADVANCED
New dates coming soon!

I regularly throw sinks in various shapes for a creative construction company. Throwing sinks can be challenging depending on the shape you choose. You often use a large amount of clay, which means there’s a lot of mass to center and pull up. The curve needs to be precise, the interior should ideally be perfectly thrown (or refined), and the hole must be carefully measured. Glazing such a large piece isn’t always straightforward either. I’m excited to show you the possibilities during this workshop.

Who:
To participate in this workshop, you really should have some experience with throwing. You need to be able to center smoothly. You don’t necessarily need to be able to center 5 kg, but you should have experience with at least 2 kg of clay. Depending on your level, we will decide on the shape and size of the sink.

Throwing on the wheel with a measuring tool from Julius Handmade.

INTENSIVE THREE-DAY SERIES THROWING
New dates coming soon!

In this three-day workshop, we will focus entirely on throwing series. We will each work at our own pace and level to create nearly identical pots. I will provide everyone with the best tools available, such as bats and professional measuring tools from Julius Handmade (see photo), so you have everything you need to create perfect series. We won’t be making plates, as they can’t dry in the short amount of time of the workshop. For plates, check out my other workshop, "Throwing Plates."

Two cups glazed in Moonshine with the left one not adequately glazed.

GLAZE CONSISTENCY, VISCOSITY AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY
New dates coming soon!

On the photo above, you can see two mugs. The glaze on the left mug is uneven, resulting in a yellowish and inconsistent color. Additionally, the glaze has defects such as pinholes. The right mug, however, has an even glaze, the color is exactly as I envisioned, and it was much easier to glaze. The glaze did not dry too quickly after application, nor did it stay wet for too long. Believe it or not, both mugs have the exact same glaze: the same ingredients, the same formulation, the same kiln, the same atmosphere, and the same temperature. So what’s the difference? It’s all about how the glaze was prepared. The glaze on the left has too much water and was not sufficiently flocculated (thickened). The glaze on the right has just the right amount of water and was slightly deflocculated (thinned but not with water). How do I know this improves the result? Because I determined the specific gravity of my glaze beforehand.

Does this issue sound familiar to you? Isn't your glaze consistent all of the time? Sometimes it’s good, and other times it’s not? Is your transparent glaze sometimes milky white? Do you expect a dark blue vibrant glaze, but it turns out green or even brown? Does your glaze sometimes drip onto the kiln shelf, even though the temperature was definitely correct for the formulation? Do you keep adding water to your glaze, but it remains thick?

If this sounds familiar to you, then this course is a must! I will teach you everything you need to know about glaze thickness, viscosity, flocculation, and deflocculation so you can achieve perfect results with your glazes every time.

In addition to a portion of theory in the morning, we will work with your own "problematic glazes" after lunch. Is your glaze crusty, unmanageable, or difficult to apply? We will work together to improve your glaze!

Who:

This course is suitable for anyone with some (limited) experience in glazing. You should have already glazed a piece (using dipping or pouring glaze), whether or not you encountered problems. No prior theoretical knowledge of glazing is required to attend this workshop.

When and Where:

New dates coming soon!

Price:

This workshop costs €125. After the course, everyone will receive a digital copy of the full presentation. Additionally, you will take home a 60ml syringe, a bottle of deflocculant, and a packet of flocculant so you can start working on optimizing your glazes immediately. Materials for optimizing your glaze are included.

What to Bring:

  • Notebook and writing tools

  • Your problematic glazes, preferably with the recipe if known. A sample or piece with issues can be useful.

  • Lunch

OUT AND ABOUT WITH SEGER AND STULL - ADVANCED GLAZE WORKSHOP
New dates coming soon!

Do you already have some basic knowledge of glazing? Are terms like glass former, stabilizer, and flux not completely foreign to you? Have you taken a basic glaze course before but are eager to learn more? Then this multi-day workshop, with a blend of theory and hands-on experience through a personal glaze project, is definitely for you!

During the first day you'll learn everything about the Seger Formula and UMF. What it is, why it's useful, and how to calculate it.

While modern tools like Glazy.org provide ready-made formulas, understanding how to do it yourself is invaluable. This knowledge helps you interpret and understand the numbers better. You’ll receive comprehensive instruction and work through exercises with the aid of a calculator.

After lunch, you’ll start working on your own glaze projects. You’ll submit a project form in advance so I can prepare to guide you through your specific glaze project. If you don’t have a personal project, you’ll collaborate with another participant.

On the second day we'll start analyzing and improving glaze recipes using Glazy.org. We will explore the Stull Map, a graph available on Glazy that you may not fully understand yet, and clarify its meaning. We will examine silica/alumina and flux ratios and their significance.

Using the gained theoretical knowledge, we’ll delve into glaze stability, and matte versus glossy glazes. We'll use software to theoretically improve recipes, followed by hands-on work on your projects with the new insights.

Afterwards the glaze samples will be fired and reviewed on April 24. We’ll examine each other's samples, discuss possible improvements, and prepare you to continue working on your own at home.

Who:

This intensive course is for those with prior experience in glaze theory. You should be familiar with basic glaze components such as glass formers, stabilizers, and flux. You should not be unfamiliar with materials like quartz and feldspar. If you've previously taken a glaze course or have explored glaze theory online or in books, and are eager to experiment and think outside the box, this workshop is for you.

The workshop is limited to a maximum of 12 participants, ensuring personalized guidance for each glaze project. You can work individually or in small groups.
