Tungsten carbide tools
General information
Tungsten carbide, the material used for this trimming loop, is the second hardest material in the world, nearly as hard as diamond. Trimming loops made from this material hardly wear out. Tungsten carbide is not a metal but a compound of tungsten and carbon. Its sharpness makes trimming smooth and enjoyable.
The loop is mounted in an ash wood handle with a high-quality brass connection. The brass extends deep into the wooden handle, giving the loop a very balanced feel in your hand.
This pear-shaped loop is ideal to trim large surface areas. Bowls or other round curves are perfectly suited to be trimmed with the pear-shaped loop. You can also trim straight surfaces with it.
Use
Tungsten carbide trimming tools are so sharp that you may need to adjust when using them, especially if you don’t have much trimming experience. Here are a few tips:
-
Use clay that is not too wet. The clay should be leather-hard, possibly even a bit firmer than what you’re used to for trimming. Sharp tools and soft clay don’t mix well; you might experience “chattering,” where small chips in the clay create texture on the surface. This can be aesthetically pleasing but not always desired!
-
Hold the tool firmly. Place your hand on top of the tool, with your index finger on the brass, and possibly even on the base of the trimming loop itself. Apply firm pressure while trimming.
-
Don’t turn too quickly if you’re still learning. Reduce the speed of your wheel if you feel like you’re losing control. This helps prevent chattering.
-
Stabilize your hands. Use the fingers of your other hand, if possible, to help control the tool.
-
Trim at the correct angle. An angle of approximately 45° is ideal. If the trimming is difficult, adjust the angle of the tool relative to the clay. You’ll find that it goes much smoother.
Maintenance
Tungsten carbide trimming loops are very sharp and only become slightly dull after years of intensive use. You can easily sharpen them with a diamond file if needed after several years.
While they are hard, they are also brittle. Handle them with care to avoid damage. Do not drop the tools or hit them against hard surfaces, as they can break. Always place your tool in a safe location to prevent it from accidentally falling off your wheel. With careful handling, these tools can last a lifetime!
The handles are made of ash wood and treated with a highly durable oil suitable for outdoor use. Although they are resistant to water, it is recommended to store them in a dry place to prevent the wood from warping.
