Do you have some dusty glaze books and/or recipes lying around but aren’t sure how to get started? Have you found online glaze recipes but still feel confused? Want to better understand what happens when you mix ingredients, apply them to your pieces, and fire them in the kiln? This introductory glaze workshop might be just what you need.

In this two-day workshop, I will provide all the basics for working with homemade stoneware glazes. The glaze recipes are suitable for cone 6 and 7 (temperatures ranging from 1200°C to 1240°C). The workshop will alternate between theory (presentations) and practice (creating glaze tests).

During the two days, we will cover the following topics:

  • What is a glaze?
  • What are the basic components of a glaze?
  • What raw materials are used to make glazes?
  • What are opacifiers and colorants?
  • How do you read and interpret a glaze recipe?
  • How do you work safely with glazes?
  • What are the different glaze testing methods? We will test various methods practically and create no less then 250 color samples!
  • You will make a kilo of glaze based on the most beautiful color sample from the workshop, which you can take home.

You will leave with 6 SOGO basic recipes and the knowledge to color them with colorant oxides. You will also receive the workshop presentation and the results (photos and explanations) in PDF format afterwards.
